Centrifugal Pump Affinity Laws
The similarity laws governing centrifugal pump performance for rotational speed (N) and impeller diameter (D) change. Applied for VSD sizing, speed-trim calculations, impeller cutdown matching, and duty point optimisation.
Flow varies linearly with speed. A 10% speed increase gives 10% more flow. Also applies proportionally to impeller diameter: Q ∝ D.
Head varies as the square of speed. A 10% speed increase raises head by 21%. Explains disproportionate head gain with small over-speeding. H ∝ D².
Power varies as the cube of speed. Reducing speed by 20% cuts demand to 51% — the thermodynamic basis for VSD energy savings in variable-flow irrigation systems. P ∝ D³.

Impeller trim note: The affinity laws also apply to diameter reduction — H ∝ D², Q ∝ D, P ∝ D³. TorqFlow™ impellers are available in 2–3 mm trim steps for exact duty-point matching without system throttle losses. Trim exceeding 15% from full nominal diameter begins to degrade efficiency as hydraulic similarity breaks down; beyond 20% trim, BEP shifts and specific speed classification changes. Over-trimmed impellers also increase internal recirculation at part flow.
